Sport Newfoundland and Labrador announced the
recipients of scholarships/bursaries during the
19th Annual Sport Newfoundland and
Labrador Scholarship Presentation during a
reception at the Powerplex in St. John’s on May
14, 2010. Eighteen recipients received a
scholarship/bursary in the amount of $500 for
their contribution to sport during 2008. One
recipient received the Frank T. Butler Memorial
Scholarship in the amount of $1000.
The Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship/
Bursary Program is designed to provide financial
assistance to qualifying amateur athletes,
coaches and officials (who are enrolled in a
post secondary institution) to help offset the
costs of training and competition.
Sport Newfoundland and Labrador President, Doug
Fowler says, “Again this year we are extremely
pleased with the quality of applications
received by the scholarship committee. The
amount of time these athletes, coaches and
officials dedicate to their sport while
maintaining excellent grades is outstanding and
we are pleased to be able to assist them.”
For the third year Sport Newfoundland and
Labrador is providing the Frank T. Butler
Memorial Scholarship. Frank was the backbone of
Memorial Athletics for close to 30 years and his
devotion to the development of university sport
in Canada and to the growth of the CIS as a
governing body helped interuniversity sport
experience significant growth and popularity
across the country. Frank’s impact on sport was
immeasurable, contributing as an athlete, coach
and administrator. Jane Brodie of St. John’s was
the recipient of the Frank Butler Memorial
Scholarship valued at $1000.
