Athletic Excellence Fund

The Athletic Excellence Fund is a strategic initiative supported by the Provincial Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador. Funded by the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development in conjunction with Sport Newfoundland and Labrador, the Athletic Excellence Fund is designed to recognize athletic excellence of the province's athletes.

The Athletic Excellence Fund encompasses the Premier's Athletic Awards, Elite Athlete Assistance Program, Team Gushue Awards and SportNL Scholarships in one application.

Application process
One application is required

  • Completed and signed applications are to be forwarded to the relevant Provincial Sport Organization on or before January 27.
  • Completed applications with the necessary rankings by the relevant PSO are to be forwarded to SportNL on or before February 17 by the PSO.
  • Applications for coach education and certification are NOT funded through this program.
  • Applicants must be a current member, in good standing with their respective Provincial Sport Organization (PSO).
  • Athletes applying for more than one program should only complete and submit ONE application.
  • Athletes may receive funding from more than one program (Premier's Athletic Awards, Elite Athlete Assistance, Team Gushue Award or the SportNL Athletic Scholarship/ Bursary), however, athletes will only receive a Premier's Athletic Award OR Elite Athlete Assistance, not both.
  • Athletes applying for funding may do so once per calendar year.
  • Incomplete applications will be returned.

Team Gushue Award

Program Overview

Funded by the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development, the Team Gushue Award is presented annually during the Premier's Athletic Awards reception. The Team Gushue Award recognizes academic and athletic excellence and was established in 2007 in recognition of Team Gushue's gold medal victory at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. The award will be presented to one male and one female athlete annually, who are currently attending, or planning to attend, a recognized post-secondary institution and have competed in a national or international level sporting competition in their last competitive season.


  • Applicants must be attending and be in good standing at a recognized post secondary institution on a full time basis.
  • Provide an official transcript.

Application Review

Applicants must adhere to the terms and conditions regarding eligibility. Please note that:

  • Students currently enrolled in a recognized post secondary institution and participating in athletic, coaching, or officiating endeavors will receive priority in award selection.
  • Students who have completed their post-secondary varsity athletic eligibility will not be considered for awards.
  • Incomplete applications will be returned.
  • Completed application forms with all supporting documentation must be received on or before January 27, 2017.

Evaluation Process

  • The Awards Selection Committee will make the final selections for the Team Gushue Scholarship.
  • Awards are subject to recommendations by budget allocations, quality and number of candidates.

Successful Applicants

  • Successful applicants will be sent an invitation to the Premier's Athletic Awards Reception. (Usually held in May each year)
  • The Athlete must currently be training and competing in the sport indicated and will continue to train upon receipt of an Award.
  • Violation of the program's guidelines, terms and conditions may result in forfeiture of the Award.
