Team NL Wins Willingdon Cup Championship

August 9, 2016, Golf Newfoundland & Labrador

St. John's, NL.....Amazing, incredible, unbelievable and astonishing are some of the words used to describe the gold medal finish by Team NL at the Inter-provincial team competition at the 2016 Canadian Men's Amateur Championships in Gatineau Quebec. No, says Executive Director Greg Hillier, “after watching these players dominate the junior and amateur ranks in this province for the past few years, coming close to placing at nationals on a number of occasions but never a medal, this year, they were not to be denied”!

Team NL comprised of 2016 Provincial Amateur Championship Blair Bursey of Gander, second place finisher Nathan Peters of Clovelly and this year's Mid-Amateur and Senior Champion Chuck Conley of Bally Haly Country Club recorded a two day total of 281 to take the golf medal with a two stroke win over Team Ontario. Team Alberta and Team Quebec will share a third place finish recording a total of 284 and three strokes behind Team NL.

While this was the first team medal for the province in golf , the achievement proved to be even a greater challenge for the young team as veteran Chuck Conley had to withdraw after the first round due to a wrist injury. The withdrawal left the two players with no option but to have to count both of their scores.

Congratulations to the team from GNL, members clubs and the general membership. For more details on the championship and to follow the results visit www.golfcanada.ca/competitions
