Cathie Parsons - Athlete

Cathie Parsons, born in Saint John, N.B., moved to Nfld. in 1969. She has had a tremendous athletic career in Racquet Sports, Field Hockey and Track & Field. She has also played Basketball and Volleyball. Her athletic achievements began while in Elementary School in Saint John and continue today in our Province of Newfoundland.
While in school in N.B., Cathie participated and won numerous basketball, volleyball, badminton and track & field events at the Local, Provincial and Atlantic levels. She also competed at the Eastern Canadian and National levels. Cathie had a third place finish in Juvenile Girls Mile Run at the 1967 Canadian Track & Field Championships in Ottawa.
It was also during her school years that Cathie was honoured as Student of the Year, Athlete of the Year and in 1967, she was the recipient of the New Brunswick Confederation Centenary Celebration Award for Track & Field.
Once settled in Nfld., Cathie continued her dominance in sport. She represented MUN from 1969-1974 in badminton, field hockey, cross country and tennis championships. In 1972, Cathie was selected MUN's MVP in field hockey and Female Athlete of the Year and Most Outstanding Contribution to Intramural and Varsity Athletics. In 1973, she won the honour both in badminton and field hockey and as well, received the Athletic Honour Society Award. During her time at MUN, Cathie captured approximately 30 Local, Provincial and Atlantic Championships while representing MUN and the Province.
Cathie has also participated in 9 Canada Winter/Summer Games as an Athlete, Coach and Mission Staff member. She also participated at National Championships representing eight sports.
From 1975 to present, Cathie has continued her dominance in badminton, squash and racquetball winning over 100 championships at the City, Provincial and Atlantic level. In 1991, she was selected to Badminton Newfoundland and Labrador's Hall of Fame and that same year received the 25th Anniversary Award for Outstanding Squash Player.
Cathie Parsons has had a long history of success as an athlete. Her talent, along with her energy and love for the game, combined with her sportsmanship ability, make her a very worthy candidate for the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame.
