Carl A. Hansen - Builder

Inducted May 24, 1975

Carl A. Hansen was born in Millertown, March 7, 1909, and spent most of his life in Corner Brook.

As a 'builder' and 'athlete' he could well qualify for both.

Carl performed in soccer, hockey, and track and field, and he also did a bit of skiing.

As a 'builder' Carl had very few peers, his record is a long and outstanding one, and it would take many pages to list his accomplishments.

In 1938 he was elected President of the Corner Brook Ski Club and he held that position until 1945.

In 1946 he was Chairman of the Corner Brook Athletic Association.

In 1948 he was Vice-President of the Western Newfoundland Soccer Association.

In 1955 he coached the Boys High School Track and Field Team, sponsored by the Lions Club.

In 1956 Carl coached the minor hockey teams and he was also Secretary of the Humber Gardens Limited in 1957.

In 1960 Carl was elected Vice-President of the Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association. In the same year Carl organized a campaign which raised two thousand dollars in four days in order to send the Corner Brook Lions Pee Wee Hockey Team to Quebec City. This Pee Wee team played in the tournament in Quebec City and Carl also accompanied the team.

In 1967 Carl was awarded the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association Centennial Plaque for his contribution to local and provincial minor hockey.

In 1970 Carl was elected Chairman of the Lions Multiple District 41 Council, governing all Lions Clubs in Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland, at a convention at Bar Harbour, Maine.

Carl is an outstanding citizen and Corner Brook has every reason to be proud of his election to the Newfoundland Sports Hall of Fame.
