Ian Campbell - Athlete

Inducted November 2, 1985

Ian Campbell was born in St. John's. His brilliant athletic career began while he was a pupil at Prince of Wales Collegiate in St. John's and continued until he retired in 1969.

In baseball, he played with the Guards team of the St. John's senior league from 1957 to 1969, performing with the St. John's junior all-stars from 1958 to 1960 and with the St. John's senior all-stars from 1960 to 1967. He was a member of the provincial senior baseball team at the Canada Summer Games in Halifax in 1969.

Campbell was selected three times as most valuable player in the St. John's junior baseball league and won the junior batting title once. He won the St. John's senior batting crown in 1964, was tops in home runs and R.B.I.'s in 1965 and 1966. He was selected as the most valuable player in the 1966 provincial championships.

His outstanding hockey career ran from minor in 1955, when he led the St. John's pee wee league in goals, to senior all-star hockey with the Guards until 1971. He played school hockey from 1957 to 1961 and performed for Guards senior and junior teams from 1960 to 1971. His service to St. John's all-stars ranged from 1960 to 1963 in junior and from 1962 to 1969 in senior. In addition, he played with Memorial University's varsity team for three years. Campbell was selected as the most gentlemanly and effective player in bantam, junior and senior, winning the senior honor twice. He twice led the St. John's senior league in scoring.

Campbell was voted St. John's Athlete of the Year in 1963 and 1965 and named to the Memorial University of Newfoundland Athletic Honor Society in 1966.

He is Vice-President of Baine Johnson Insurance in St. John's and is married to the former Janet Drover. They have three children.
