		<description>May 10, 2012 - ST. JOHN’S – Sportfest is back! Sport Newfoundland and Labrador’s three-day, interactive festival runs from May 10 to 12, and features provincial sport organizations showcasing sports that are currently available throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Approximately 5,000 children from 29 schools across the Avalon Peninsula will have the opportunity to try both team and individual sports over the next few days.

“Sportfest has grown a lot from last year, with an increase in registered provincial sport organizations and participating children,” said Doug Fowler, President of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador. “We had to move the event to the Techniplex, which is a larger venue, in order to accommodate the volume of kids and participating provincial sport organizations.”

This course is open to coaches of all sports and aimed at coaches who are relatively new to coaching and likely coach at the community level.

		<description>May 4, 2012 - ST. JOHN’S – Sport Newfoundland and Labrador has announced the scholarship recipients of the 2012 Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Program. Nineteen scholarships were awarded today at a reception at the Johnson Geo Centre.

“These scholarship winners are true examples of excellence in sport,” said Minister Dalley. “It is very important to acknowledge their accomplishments, both academic and athletic, and to encourage them in their chosen sport.”

The Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to qualifying amateur athletes, coaches and officials, who are enrolled in a post secondary institution, to assist in offsetting the costs of training and competition. The program has been in place for over 20 years, with thousands of dollars being distributed to deserving students around the province.

Over $800,000 Invested to Upgrade Infrastructure for 2012 Summer Games

A total of $876,230 was announced today to upgrade infrastructure for the 2012 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games being held in Carbonear and Harbour Grace in August. The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs, and the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, made the announcement in Carbonear. The ministers were joined by the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Natural Resources and MHA for Carbonear - Harbour Grace, and Milton Peach, Co-Chair, 2012 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games Host Committee.

		<description>April 16, 2012 - This past weekend, Sport Newfoundland and Labrador presented the 2012 Provincial Sport Awards to seven recipients and inducted two women and four men into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame. The awards were presented during the 2012 Annual Stars and Legends Awards Gala held Saturday, April 14, at the Sheraton Hotel in St. John’s.

The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, attended the gala and extended congratulations to all of the award winners and inductees.

“This unique event recognizes those in the province who have achieved the highest level of excellence in their sport and also honours the men and women who have shaped sport in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister Dalley. “I congratulate the tremendous dedication of our provincial athletes, coaches, teams and executive members, as well as the remarkable accomplishments of our Hall of Fame members.
